Spring update

It has been 2 months since we planted the trees and there are plenty of signs of new growth. Some of the hornbeam have a few dead leaves on them, but they arrived from the nursery already in leaf so it is likely that the stress of being planted has caused those leaves to die and hopefully once roots are established new ones will grow. We had good rainfall for the couple of weeks after planning but it has been an unseasonably dry March so we were a little concerned about the saplings getting enough water. However, we needn’t have worried, it is the UK after all, so the rain soon returned!

The new fence has been very effective at keeping the sheep out but it does mean that the grass is starting to grow quite long. We have had to strim around the base of the saplings so that they don’t get overwhelmed by the grass. Once they have grown tall enough we can allow the grass and wildflowers to grow. There are already plenty of lesser celandine and some bluebells popping up.

Rich brought back this beautiful piece of wood after felling a Grand Fir and it has made the perfect sign for the entrance to Struan’s Wood.
