Whilst everyone else is enjoying the unseasonably dry spring, we have been wishfully looking at every grey cloud that passes overhead in the vain hope of rain.

Young trees need frequent rain-fall in the first months after planting until the roots have established well enough to find ground water. The water table is fairly high in Struan’s Wood so the ground is wet enough but the roots aren’t yet long enough to reach it.
The solution has been many, many trips backwards and forwards over the ground carrying a 14 litre watering can in each hand. (Note: dogs are entirely unhelpful with this task – either drinking the water out of the can, or peeing on the saplings!). Watering 3,500 trees spread over 5 acres takes a long time so we’re doing a bit every day whilst keeping a keen eye on the met office weather forecast.
